CONDEMNATION OF THE UNFORTUNATE BEHAVIOUR OF THE POLICE WHO PICKED UP BALLOT BOXES DURING AN SRC/NUGS ELECTION EXERCISE ON UDS WA CAMPUS.

We write to express our strongest condemnation of the unlawful act of the Upper West Regional police command where police officers forcefully carried away ballot boxes as well as all voting logistics without any regard for University authorities, the SRC, aspirants and the general student body. Not only did this act steal away the voting rights of students of the University, it also caused scare and panic on the University environment and painted a picture as though there was riot on campus. Indeed, we refuse to tolerate such inhumane act by the Police and we invite all the student body as well as Ghanaians to join us condemn this unfortunate act. What is even more sad and irritating is the fact that the Upper West Deputy Regional police Commander who gave out the order has refused to return the ballot boxes after management of the University visited his office to enquire reasons for such an unlawful act. According to him, he acted on the instruction of the Attorney-General’s (AG’s) office in Wa when some students visited his office to lodge a complaint about a possible election violence and would only release the boxes upon instruction from the A-G’s office and not a widely rumored injunction allegedly placed on the election.

The Divisional police commander who led the raid clearly was acting on the instructions of the deputy regional commander. When management visited the AGs office it was revealed to their utmost surprise that no such order came from his office.

They proceeded to the WA court only to be told categorically that the court did not order or grant any injunction on the said election.

This regretable behaviour of the police has not only cost the SRC a good furtune of money as the credibility  of the election has been compromised hence the need to organised fresh elections but has also caused innocent aspirants their highly scarce resources that they invested in getting their people to come vote.

The deputy police commander in all this has shown no remorse or sign of regrete but has rather stated emphatically that he is a PHD holder. It is more sad to think that a holder of such highly recognized certificate will behave in this manner.

We demand by this release, the regional police command to officially return the boxes and all logistics, render an apology to university management,  the entire student  body and also bare the cost for the monetory loss of both the aspirants and the SRC.
